What to Expect

Everything painted or coated using Cerakote or KG GunKote must be baked to cure properly. This prevents items like rubber or heat sensitive items from being coated. Some heat sensitive items can be coated with an air-cure version which takes longer to cure and ultimately is not as strong in regards to scratch resistance, durability and overall adhesion.

It is also important for you to understand that these coatings are not the “magic” finish that will protect your firearm or other part(s) from everything. Even though these coatings are capable of withstanding almost any chemical, they can still be scratched. This should not occur with little pressure.

Now, if you were to drop your firearm on rocks, drop your rifle on the driveway, or allow your firearm to fall onto something hard like metal, there will be some scratches from any direct contact with hard surfaces in a fast and/or hard pressure motion.

Similarly, for pistols or items you keep in a holster, regardless of the material; kydex, leather, etc. time and use can cause the coating to come off. If the holster is too tight, too loose causing continuous rubbing, or something similar, the coating will naturally wear.

Lastly, in order for your custom gun painting finishes to achieve the best adhesion, sandblasting the gun or firearm parts are required. There are times that the Cerakote will cause the finish to be thicker than OEM unless all the original finish comes off.

Some of the factory finishes on the market today are actually very strong and thick. Prepping these surfaces enough for the custom firearm coating to adhere is the best option if the original finish is not damaged and withstands sandblasting without coming off “easy”. Keeping the good original finish can add to the overall integrity of the finished coating.

Feel free to email us with any questions you may have.

For custom firearm coating we primarily use Cerakote or GunKote as our process. If you would like more information on these coating processes you may find their websites here:
